My biopsy was a little different than Jackie's, so I figured I would tell you about mine too. I have had five of them to date and they are perfectly tolerable.
The doctor gave me a shot to numb the area, so you barely feel the needle when the numbing kicks in. Then he takes a tool that looks like a hollow pen, twists it into the area, pulls it out, and it brings a plug of skin out with it. It takes about two stitches to close the hole and the scar was gone within a year.
I had a procedure similar to Jackie's done, but that involved removing a patch of skin about 5x5 on the back of my leg. Within a few weeks you couldn't even tell it had been done.
It's really not terribly painful and I don't think your one year old will suffer anymore trauma than when they go to get their innoculations.
