In answer to your question, did the docs know about it 35 years ago, sure they did. I was born in 1944 and my mother was told I had 'congentital icthyosis' then. And nope, there was really no treatment except cream. I think the name and the condition have been known about for a very long time. I am surprised you have not been diagnosed til 35. I have met Doctors socially and professionally over the years who have recognised it instantly.
