My son Evan is going into fifth grade and has EHK. Around here kids choose an instrument and start playing in the band if they choose to. I think band would be great for Evan. His older brother does it and we have a fairly musial family. My question is, does anyone have any advice on choosing an instrument or success stories for us? He is afraid a brass instrument will cause problems around his lips. We are worried some that he will not have the finger dexterity to play the woodwind instruments. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Jordan has been playing in the band since 6th grade...she plays the flute(maily because that's the instrument I've been playing for over 20 years)But also because it's the instrument she liked the best when they let the students choose during the first week of class. My advice would be to let Evan try several different instruments and see which one suits him best...even if he starts to play one and decides he'd rather play another, he can always switch. Jordan also plays the piano and wants to learn the guitar. IP: Logged |

Dee, Believe it or not I was a band geek when I was in junior high and high school. I played the drums, both marching band and concert band. Marching band was a lot harder because the drum weight had to rest on your body using straps and belts, but the worst thing was those awful uniforms they made us wear. They were so thick and heavy I always over heated in them, even at night. Concert season was much better, sitting down playing a drum set or standing and playing a drum is much easier. Could also help with coordination, dexterity and range of motion. I tried playing the Tuba, but the constant weight on my shoulder caused blistering and the mouth piece did hurt my lips and make them raw, much different then a woodwind like tatiana played. I also played harmonica, very hard on the lips also. Perhaps the band teacher would be willing to let him try a few different instruments before he commits to any particular one. Keith. IP: Logged |

I played trumpet for four years, and I actually found that it helped to exfoliate my lips. It may be different, because I don't have EHK, but I generally found that my lips were drier on days that i didn't play. IP: Logged |

I have lamellar and I have played both the piano and guitar. The guitar is awful until you develop calluses, but I eventually did. They're of course gone now since I don't play anymore. Hmmm, maybe I'll start up again. IP: Logged |
