Hey people,
Just wanted to ask if any of you have gotten chicken pox more then once. My wife, who apparantly has never had them, has them now. A child in her class exposed everyone before they knew what it was. She doesn't look too bad yet, she has many red dots all over her chest and back, now on her arms and legs too. I know it can effect adults much more severly then children so I'm kinda worried. I have spoken to a few people who have gotten them twice and one person even 3 times. I got them when I was very young and had no complications at all concerning the pox or my EHK. Getting them a second time, as an adult, could be a different story. Has anybody had them more then once, if so, what was the outcome? I'm kinda freakin out here and running to the mirror every time I get an itch on my face, nothing yet. Chicken pox can turn into shingles as an adult, I'm sure the combined outcome of that and EHK wouldn't be a good one. Let me know if anyone has any experience with this topic.
Keith.

Hi Keith..
I have heard that in rare cases chicken pox can happen more than once. Chicken pox does start on the trunk and spread to the extremities. We just had a chicken pox scare in our home. We have a 2 month old babe with EHK and our 4 yo got a mysterious rash in the groin area, two days before he was scheduled for his vaccination. Your wife should check with her doc b/c there are newer ways to treat chicken pox (shots etc). You might also want to check with a doc, perhaps they might have some suggestions. Best wishes. I hope your wife's case isn't too severe and that you do not get another round.

Not specific to EHK, but I know you and she were talking about family planning. If she's pregnant, you may run into problems with the baby. It can cause birth defects during early pregnancy and infant pneumonia in late pregnancy. Doctors use acyclovir to treat it, but acyclovir has a nasty habit of destroying the liver, so odds are good she'll have to ride it out if she's not pregnant.

As for shingles, you should be fine unless you're immunocompromised. The virus is already dormant in your cells and should only pop up again if you get really sick or debilitated.

Good luck!

Hearsay, I don't know if you have email, but the acyclovir thing caught my attention, I was wondering if you have more info about that (about how it affects the liver) if you could email me, my daughter has been taking it for about 9 years to suppress cold sores that erupt all over her face...... (sorry, all, for jumping in on this thread with an unrelated issue......). My email address is posted under my profile. Thanks!

Laura, my comment on the acyclovir was not from research, but from memory. My FIL developed encephalitis about 7 years ago and they treated him with acyclovir, other antibiotics and seizure medicine all at the same time. I know that his liver was damaged from the cocktail, and I recall him (he's a neurologist) saying that he didn't want to take the acyclovir or the seizure medicine because of the liver damage that had already begun. I remember that he had to have liver enzyme tests done while on the medicines and that he was not allowed to drink, either.

Anyway, I did some research, and apparently he is incorrect - acyclovir is processed through the kidneys, not the liver, and I found a clinical study that monitored its use over 10 years with no differences in effect than the placebo. Another site said that overdosing on it can cause kidney damage, but it didn't say anything about liver problems.

I'm sorry that my information was incorrect; as I said, I was going from memory, which can be a dangerous thing to do!

Yes, I had a reoccurance of chicken pox almost two years ago. It showed up on my arm and my upper back. It came back in the form of shingles and it was not extremely bad. But, it felt like somebody beat my body up with a baseball bat and I was fatigued even for a couple weeks after it was gone. I was on anti-biotics for a week and I only had them for about a week and a half. I have heard of some people having a hard time getting rid of the shingles. Mine reoccurance was caused by stress and my husband told me to slow down and stop trying to be superwoman. As far as my lamellar ich goes...it did not effect it a lot, other than the anti-biotics drying my skin out some like it usually does to me. I hope you don't get them and I hope this info helps ease your mind. Karen

Thanks for all your responses. I've been doing alot of research on both chicken pox and shingles since my post. I should be ok, my primary concern is my wife having it as an adult. She is on zovirax now and things don't seem to be progressing much at all, maybe this stuff really helps. It's funny how no matter how much info we have at our disposal on the net, or where ever, I can never get as much relating to Ich as I can here from people who have been there, makes me really appreciate this board.

I had the chicken pox when I was 13 and I have ichthyosis. I remember it looking like a mosquito bite. My dermatologist gave me a very large horse pill to take b/c he said the sores were not only on the outside but inside also. I was bad had it everywhere but I am lucky no scar.

Good luck to your wife.

Hey Keith,

We missed you guys at Cindie's wedding but I will be sending you some wedding pix soon. It was awesome meeting Les for the first time after all these years of chatting with him. Anyway, give Bev my best and yes I know I’m a bit late, but I don't get on here much as I should. However, the reason I’m posting is yes it is possible for someone to get them more than once. My son Jonathan had then as a baby but they weren't real bad, then later at the age of I think six he got them again along with his younger brother Michael and it was horrendous. Fever shot up to over 104 and for Jon he even momentarily lost his vision, scared us both silly.

I got them as an adult and it was the most horrendous thing I’ve ever gone through. Probably the sickest I’ve ever been, and of course having EHK it didn't help any. However, when I got them, I wasn't alone. Cindie and James my oldest son also got them so I was trying to take care of two babies’ ages 1 & 2 1/2 and trying to take care of myself.

Cindie's fever got so high she was having hallucinations and mine got so high I got up to make a bottle for James and also to give Cindie a sponge bath to bring her fever down and I passed out on the way to the kitchen, woke up in the middle of the floor with her standing over me crying. So it can be rather nasty for adults. Hopefully by the time you read this Beverly is doing better and you don't have them, if she's still recuperating tell her she's in my prayers and so are you. I miss our chats so email me a letter sometime.

Love you guys,
Karen Sawyer

Hi Karen,

you wrote: "Keith...I miss our chats so email me a letter sometime".

My sentiments exactly, I just said something similar in an email just yesterday. I have missed chatting on Net with YOU (KAREN) also...the group used to have a wonderful time, and how time has flown...must have been 2 or 3 years ago now...

See ya
Pauline.

Hi Keith: Yep, I had chx pox twice as an infant and both times, evolved into staph infection. I'm assuming your wife does not have ichthyosis, yes? Hopefully, the nasty little bug will leave you alone. Perhaps a visit to your doc for an rx of prophylactic antibiotics?? Just a thought. The idea of chx pox again gives me sympathetic itchees!!

Just a side note. Even with getting the chicken pox vaccine, it's still possible to get chicken pox. What a waste it seems to get it. My niece had the vaccine, but not too long ago got the chicken pox, although not too bad. I had the vaccine about a couple of years ago (I'm so bad with dates) and just had bloodwork done. I was told I am not immune to the chicken pox even though I had the vaccine. I'm just hoping I'll never get them as an adult. As a kid I was around my siblings and others that had it, but never got it. It sounds horrible as an adult.
